Straight leg raise – Active assessment
Testing for:
– nutation of the sacrum
– pelvic / femoral IR
Goal:
90 degrees
Results:
0-45 degrees = Compression of posterior pelvis (deep hip ER’s are tight)
45-90 degrees = Ability to nutate and IR
How to take the test:
1) Lay down on your back with both legs extended on a hard and flat surface and have your arms resting close to you
2) Slightly flex the foot back on the tested side and keep it flexed back for the duration of the test
3) Very slowly start raising the leg up
4) Move until the movement feels light, easy and smooth
5) Stop when any of the following applies:
– knee bends
– other leg lifts up
– pelvis rolls to one side
– moving leg begins to cramp
– hip feels stuck
6) Measure the angle between the starting and end positions
