Standing on one leg

Do you get lucky or do you have control over your body? There is a really big difference between the two. One will make you better, the other one will make you hurt. Standing on one leg looks simple, yet it’s a really important skill. We don’t even think about it, but running for example is a movement where we constantly shift the bodyweight from one leg to the other. If we can’t keep the leg stable and maintain our balance when we are in one place – how could we expect the body to move efficiently when this weight transfer from one leg to the other needs to happen in a fraction of a second thousands of times?

Start by standing tall and upright, and pull one knee up as high as possible without losing this shape.

• How high can you pull the knee up?

• In 30 seconds (or a minute) how many times did you have to touch the other leg down?

• Is there a difference between the left and right sides?

• Can you do it with your eyes closed?

This is a very simple skill that should be practiced until it becomes easy and part of your daily habits. If you have a balance beam or slackline, play on that as well. There is a different post where I speak more about balancing on them.
