Hip flexion  – Active assessment

Testing for:

– counter-nutation of the sacrum

– pelvic / femoral ER

Goal:

knee to chest

Results:

60-100 degrees = Pelvic IR bias / Anterior orientation

100+ degrees = Ability to counter-nutate and turn sacrum towards active leg

Knee to chest = full turn of sacrum towards that side

How to take the test:

1) Lay down on your back with both legs extended on a hard and flat surface and have your arms resting next to you

2) Start flexing the knee on the tested side and keep it flexed for the duration of the test

3) Slowly pull the leg up towards the chest in a straight line

4) Move until the movement feels light, easy and smooth

5) Stop when any of the following applies:
– leg abducts
– other leg lifts up
– hip feels stuck or pinched

6) Measure the angle between the starting and end positions
